No where in the top 3 let alone top 10. Games like Dragon's Dogma, Demon's Soul, Last of Us, Tomb Raider by Square Enix and Shadow of Colossus/The ICO bundled packaged are the top 5 for me with some of these just too good of titles for a single top 3.
What hurts Dust from putting it in my top 10 list (and I'd have to had both Resistance 2 and MAG but not Resistance 3) bump it was the lack of polish you saw on it after a year of release; you can say destiny (which isn't in my top 10 either) may not be as "great" as Dust but it still released with a better polish and more fine-tuned balancing in PvP for the most part.
The balance is still iffy in Dust imo; your railguns and combat rifles don't have the same pitfalls of range as AR's do, you can technically do ingenious upgrades to make a breach smg do more damage than a Duvolle can do which is scary. The overall matchmaking is still fine tuning and getting stuck in terrain still happens during the game which is problematic when your getting shot at especially.
It's really the sense that Dust is in that state that it's fine tuning itself after being released when it really hasn't been just released. While it's worth noting they tried doing something you don't see in FPS games the really hard part of it all was they had a bigger advertising push than Demon's Souls (literally DS released with a US$10k advertising campaign in the US and that was the highest it spend in a single country), was released when there was no prominent FPS game out with a high active user base and it enjoyed the novelty of being a mmorpg/FPS experience that pushed the advertising envelope even more.
It was also a bad idea to blame 'limitations of the console" for Dust's overall initial experience. At some level it was really an issue of the games state of affairs and the constant need to "add content' vs. "fixing current content" stance. I'd say Dust would still crack top 17 but it's really the whole game package versus other game packages. Dragon's Dogma, which can be argued to be a Demon Soul's clone at some level, at least gave something original and unique in experiencing the game and it's lore. Tome Raider was rebooted in a magnificient manner and Last of Us brought us something old in a new packaging that was fun.
If Dust 514 was released in the state of CCP Rat's quality standing, I think Dust's fate and future would've been brighter but that's a hindsight thing. Id still also put other titles like FF14, Batman:Arkham Asylum, Bioshock and Fallout (which was hard to leave out of the top 5) as titles worthier of being rated above Dust514 easily. Borderlands, Deus Ex and Darksiders are also other titles you can make an argument for/against but would still give Dust a run for it's money if your not looking only at genre or category type. |
